Ambient light reading of an fstop of 8. I then had to underexpose it by 3 stops meaning i had to close the aperture making it an fstop of 11.  (This will underexpose the background making it darker.) I then had to change the flash back to its original reading which was F8 , I did this by pressing the pilot key on the flash to test it out and had to do this until i was able to get the original ambient reading. By doing this my subject had the correct exposure but the background was more darker. This works well on images where there is a sunset at the back and your subject is still well beautifully exposed.

Rineke Dijkstra

Rineke Dijkstra (born 2 June 1959 in Sittard) is a Dutch Photographer. She lives and works in Amsterdam. Dijkstra concentrates on single portraits, and usually works in series, looking at groups such as adolescents, clubbers, and soldiers, from the Beach Portraits of 1992 and on, to the video installationBuzzclub/Mysteryworld (1996-1997), Tiergarten Series (1998-2000), Israeli Soldiers (1999-2000), and the single-subject portraits in serial transition: Almerisa (1994-2005), Shany (200-2003), Olivier (2000-2003), and Park Portraits (2005-2006). Her subjects are often shown standing, facing the camera, against a minimal background. This compositional style is perhaps most notable in her beach portraits, which generally feature one or more adolecents againts a sea scape. This style is again seen in her studies of women who have just given birth.

chiaroscuro lighting

For this task we were in the studio and we had to try and manipulate a photo.
This is the post production of the final image. I used black and white/ brightness and contrast.

Class Task- Studio

In this picture we played with the back lighting to bring out the detail in Tonies Hair

3 Point Lighting. Key, Fill and Backlighting to create a more 3D Dimensional look
We then realised that the background wasnt as white as it should, so we then put another
lamp to reflect on the Background to lighten up the colour.

In this photo the background colour is more whiter

In this image we worked with gels mixing red and purple together.

I chose black and white because i love that its a format that suits almost any type of photography. Portraits, Landscapes, Urban landscapes, architecture. It adapts to any lighting situations whereas with colour you will need brightly lit studios or a bright sunny day. By taking the colour of the image it speaks for itself. Some people think that black and white can be harsh. Black and White can also express feelings that are felt at the exact moment. A feeling of confusion, darkness, grief or it could be a feeling of love, peace and security.

"When you photograph people in colour you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in B&W , you photograph their souls"

Lisa Reihana

Lisa Reihana is a Maori artist who has played a leading role in the development of film and multimedia art in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Her work demonstrates a keen interest to communicate complex ideas about indigenous identity and bi-cultural living. Reihana's desire to address and engage with contemporary experience through diverse media is expressed in installations that are collages drawn from eclectic sources. Her examination of cultural histories utilises photography, sculpture and time-based arts.

In this task we have been asked to manipulate a photo of an artist. I have chosen to manipulate a photo by Lisa. I worked in the Studio using only a back light (Left side where you can see where the light is coming from on her hair) and a fill on her right, so that i could achieve the black background. It seems that Lisa has only used one main source of lighting on her right cheek. (This is evident on her left cheek where you can see the soft shadow bouncing of her whole left side of her
face.)

I then realised that my background wasnt as wide as shown on lisa reihanas so then i had to think what could i do to make my background wider? So i then thought that if i used the masking tool and grab a plain black background picture from the internet i would be able to merge my subject (susie) to the black background i got from the internet, make my subject smaller so that i could crop just from the top of her hair. This is my end result.
