Illyan Wittenberg

.

Form: In most of Illyans work i have learned that he bases his photography in the studio and outside. He tends to keep it real and natural but still keeping that soft diffused lighting , making his models appear more suttle and full of life. He uses a digital SLR and seems to use alot of central compositions and different vantage points. He loves to use the outdoors preferably on the beach where its very textural and with nature. A place where families would normally go to as a family activity or hangout spot.

Content: Illyan engages with Weddings, New Borns, Babies and mostly portraits. He has a unique way of displaying and capturing special moments, and makes sures that his clients experience that "Wow" factor." I choose to treat business partners, customers and stakeholders with respect while listening to the market-place and creating a ‘Wow’ factor. I don’t just take pictures – I create them." - See more at: http://ilanwittenberg.com/about/#sthash.VL6LvwoJ.dpuf

Context: Although i was not here when Illyan came to visit the faculty i did some research on who Illyan is. Illyan is originally from Israel but raised in New Zealand. He is a passionate Photographer who gets his motivation and drive from his clients to ensure that they get the best quality photographs. He achieves this by focusing on customers real needs and delivering his best product and services.

Printing Process!

Test Print for Caroline

Although i didn't do a lot of test printing i was quite happy with the result for the first time. As i got my test prints back i immediately could spot what i could have done better. The first two images came out quite dark then the actual image itself... So i had to push my exposures up a bit more and also my vibrance because it was cancelling out my colours making it more duller and flat. I also noticed that my background colours weren't all white but i actually liked the grey colour for the background so i left it.

EDITING

Image 1
In this image in the test print i didn't realise that the little girl had food all over her mouth. I couldn't see anything from the camera lens until i had to look through them on the big screen and you can see it real clearly. So i had to do some work in photoshop to clear the biscuit crumbs near her mouth and teeth.

Image 2 Original Copy
Image 2 After Post production

As you can see in this image it has more life and their skin complexion is really popping. The exposures in her skin are much more vibrant and fuller. I want to achieve this exact look as i print it out too.

10: How to Hang a Framed Photo Correctly

Hanging photos on a wall should be done correctly to prevent them from falling and so the photos are hung level. It is important to make sure that there are no electrical wires in the wall that a nail or hook may puncture. A live wire detector can be used to determine whether there are any wires behind the wall. This device scans the walls and can detect where wires, pipes, and studs are located. To ensure the photo frame will be mounted at the correct height on the wall, use a pencil to mark where the top of the photo frame will be. Using a ruler, measure the distance on the frame between the top of the frame and the wire or the hanging tab on the photo frame. Measure this distance down from the pencil mark on the wall and make another mark. This is where the picture frame hook or nail will go in the wall. Hammer the picture hook into the wall and hang the photo frame on the wall. A spirit level can be used to ensure that the photo frame is straight if two hooks on either end of the frame are required to hang the photo.

Fale Family

Form: (Group Discussion)

- Very tight crop
- S shape composition
- Contrasty photo
- Direct Lighting
-Very textural image. Grey Jumper, Blue Jacket, Her gazing.

What would i do differently if i had to reshoot?

- Be careful that im not cutting out the hands of the child and the fathers hand.

FAILS

Evaluation: Today i done my second photoshoot on the Fale family. I thought i did a good job but then as i started to look through them i noticed that most of the photos the father was blinking. I didn't notice till after the shoot. It was a huge step back for me. There were times when the sun was really bright and then sometimes when it was cloudy, which set quite dark shadows on there faces and the lighting was quite harsh. So i had to just put up with the weather. I also didn't realise that i was cutting out hands and feet so it made me think more about my composition.

What worked?

What didn't work?

What i could do better?

What i could do better next time is have a reflector to shut down the dark shadows around their faces. Think about my composition focusing on the hands and legs, and learn other ways to communicate with kids who dont like to take photos.

ShigeyukiKihara

"My existence as a Fa'afine person goes against every thread which makes up the social fabric which is essentially western based"
 - Shigeyukikihara

ShigeyukiKihara is a contemporary artist who is the first New Zealander to hold a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum Art, New York. Kihara portrays herself as a fa'afine who was born in Samoa and her father is a Japanese. Kiharas self portraits show provocative poses that portray colonial images of Polynesian women as sexual objects.

Form:

-Central Composition
-Deep Depth of Field
- Staged Studio Photography yet creates an illusion of it being set in the 'natural' world
- Traditional woven mats and exotic plants
- Colonial Velvet Couch
- Strong use of vertical lines
- Lines and Pattern (Mats)
- Tryptych

Content:

In this image Kihara uses her own body to reconstruct the colonial gaze preserved as "ethnographic imagery". She undermines the scheme of Western classifications including gender by portraying both a male and female subject. From the viewpoint of European Art History, a rich series of association springs to mind. Firstly, a beautiful woman elegantly perched on a divan, elbow resting on a pillow evokes a long tradition of representations of women in European painting, such as Jacques Louis David . The pose and minimal garments is what enables this identification. The "Punctum" transforms our reading of this photograph; without the cap, she is just a naked woman provocatively displaying prosetrior. The key role of this garment in facilitating the orientalist fantasy points to the importance of the grass skirt in Kihara's photographs. Present in one photograph and absent in the other two the skirt becomes a full crum for interpretation. The skirt draws attention to the "ethnic" nature of the subject and brings to mind related popular photographic images of "Dusky Maidens," such as A.M Brodziak and CO.

Context:

By using her self to portray this powerful idea Kihara's work provides a critique of Western binary norms of sexuality and gender onto indigenous Pacific peoples. Just as ethnographic photography provided a limited and distorted stereo typical representation of non western people. Kihara draws upon her status as being located "in the or space between men and women" in exploring these issues. In this she builds upon the concept of as articulated by Albert Wendt: "It is the space between, the betweenness, not empty space, not space that separates but space that relates, that holds separate entities and things together in the unity that is all, the space that is context, giving  meaning to things" (Wendt 1996, 18-19)

Self-Direct Fashion Photographer

Ulla Nyemen

I have found a Childrens Fashion Photographer by the name of Ulla Nymen. Nymen was born in Denmark in which she has always had an interest in Fashion Photography. On the age of 15 she went to paris to assist Gunner Larson, a Danish avantgarde photographer. Her first appointment was with with Dutch Elle which then led her to bigger opportunities to work with Elle Junior, Oilily and now Vogue Bambini in who she still works with today. During that time period she shifted from main fashion into specialising in Kids Fashion.

Form:
- Ulla Nymen uses a deep depth of field
- Chinese Props
- Contrasting colours (blue and red)
- Direct Lighting
- Not quite rule of thirds but can be seen horizontally
- Studio lighting could be used on set location

Content:
- Advertises Children's Clothing
- Even though fashion is not my kind of photography i do love the way Ulla uses her colours. I love the feel and how much energy it brings out. This image gives me an idea on how to use more colours in my photos and show the positive vibe that we feel through the family and children.

Kingsize Studios and Studio Family Portrait

On Thursday 21st of May our class had another opportunity to visit Kingsize Studios located at Grey Lynn, Auckland. They're open every Mon-Fri, 8.00am to 6pm and weekends 8am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. Kingsize studios offers four spaces: Studio 1 (biggest studio in the country) , a large drive-in with a 7m wide cyc; Studio 3 a medium general purpose space ideal for still life, look books, casting and more; Studio 4 a smaller but dedicated daylight space (with black out) perfect for fashion, portraits, and still life; and finally the Garden Studio: a purpose built out door, daylight space. We met Luke who kindly took his time off to give us a tour around the Studio. They also hire out their equipment which ranges from the oldest to the most recent equipment out. He also showed us a brief demonstration of the basic lighting kit that are usually booked out for most days of the week. It was a very simple setup and he also gave us tips on how we should set up the lights (Cons and Pros). Not only do they hire out equipment but they also offer workshops starting from beginners to the more advanced photographers, intern programs, education and consulting. The focus for all the workshops is practicality: how can we teach you how to be more effective with your tools and skills, so as to make a better image, and potentially, how to earn.

Studio Family Portrait

FAILURES

Experimenting with studio lighting and trying to find the correct exposures.

Over Exposed

Looks too dull and overexposed

SNOT FREE! (Well tried my best)

Dry snot, lighting on left is still a bit too bright.

Much better!

During the shoot i didn't realise that the child had dry snots all over her face. I didn't see this until i had a look through properly on the big screen. So i done some researching on how to remove it. I had to do this through every photo. I also turned the exposure up just a little more so when i print it doesn't turn out too .

FINAL

How does the Studio relate to me?
